Perkūnas
Perkunas ~ God of Thunder to the Baltic Peoples. Perkūnas, the thunder god, fertility god, and the god of law and order. He played many roles in the Baltic religion and was one of the most important gods. He is a sky deity who is easily compared to Germanic Thor, or Greek Zeus.
The ancient people associate this god with the oak tree, as this tree is most often struck by lightning. The Oak tree is a sacred tree in a variety of cultures. It is believed that Perkūnas fights the evils of the world and aims his thunderbolt against wicked and immoral spirits, the corrupt men and even uses his thunderbolt against other gods when necessary!
The Lithuanian myths reference Perkūnas and tell a story of how he punished the Moon god Menuo (Meness) in the story of Meitas. See our post about Saule for reference. In ancient folklore the thunderbolts that were found by humans were said to be used as protection against evil spirits and cures for diseases. These were known as "bullets of Perkūnas" and were usually flints or bronze celts. They even believed that people struck by lightning could help others with protection against the dishonorable.
