Mawu

Mawu ~ Goddess of Creation & Fate

Mawu or Mahu is a West African goddess known for the creation of life, earth and all living creatures on earth. She is a master of fate and is associated with the moon and fertility. She was prominent in the Dahomey mythology of West Africa. West African culture is rich with art, music, and many different types of stories that are still told today. Mawu was a goddess who was called upon for birth, abundance and fertility of all kinds. Most of Africa correlates this goddess to the moon because it is said that she is a part of a divine duality called "Mawu-Lisa". Mawu is the female divinity representing the moon, and Lisa is the male divinity representing the Sun. Mawu was responsible for the creation of humanity & all things, so this is why the people of West Africa showed gratitude to her so deeply. Mawu is also linked to the World Serpent. She asked the world serpent to coil up and give support to the earth in fear that her wondrous creation was becoming too large and overwhelming.

Those who still wish to show gratitude and praise towards Mawu today can take seeds and plant them in their own gardens and fields in the name and remembrance of this beautiful creator goddess. Mawu can be called upon when you are in need of direction and knowledge. Palm kernels are also associated with this goddess, and some use palm kernel divination to feel more connected to her.
