Kitsune - Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog?!

 Kitsune (kit-soon-eh) were mythical creatures in Japanese mythology who were known to have special connections to the spirit world. The Kitsunes are part of not only Japanese, but also Chinese, Korean and Indian folklore. This mythical creature has made quite an impact on Eastern traditions and mythologies for hundreds of years. This fox like creature with nine tails was seen as a symbol of intelligence, benevolence, and integrity. Maybe Kitsune is the inspiration on why we have the saying "as smart as a fox"?!

There are actually thirteen types of Kitsune in Japanese mythology, and each of them are of their own elements including: ocean, earth, fire, spirit, wind & more. The Kitsune no matter what kind are connected to the spirit world. The ancient Japanese people thought that, because in our world - since foxes burrowed underground, the Japanese believed the underground was a passage way between the Earth and the Spirit world. Fun fact: the Japanese believed that some Kitsune would actually grow older and shape shift into women. These women who were previously fully Kitsune would often try to marry for love, or go after men for their own wants. Sometimes in Japanese culture a woman of lewd behavior are referred to as Kitsune. Kitsunes can be male or female, but as they grew older they would mostly transition to female.

Most of these fox like creatures with nine tails are actually extremely loyal, and strive their best to keep promises made to humans. Kitsune are often depicted in various forms of Japanese art with multiple tails. You will see them in paintings as well as statues throughout different regions in the Eastern part of the world. The reason why the Kitsune has so many tails, is that when a Kitsune turned 100 years old he or she would grow a new tail thus gaining more power and developing new skills.

For every 100 years that passed the Kitsune will grow a new tail. After living for 1000 years, the Kitsune will then become the famous 9 tailed fox which is known as: ..
