Huehueteotl, the old god of the Aztecs. He was the god who represented Fire, specifically the Fire of Life. He is associated with Xiuhtecuhtli, the god of turquoise. The Ancient Aztecs believed that these two gods were part of one deity. To put it simply, they completed each other.
Huehueteotl was believed to transform, purify, and regenerate the world with the power of fire! He represented the natural regeneration of earth that would happen when seasons would change. As with all mythologies, there are creation myths.
In the Aztec creation of the world myth, Huehueteotl was said to be one of the original founders of the world and also was said to have created the sun, giving light to the people.
Every 52 years (an Aztec century) the Aztec people would have a ceremony dedicated to Huehueteotl. This ceremony would celebrate the starting of a new cycle of the cosmos.
