Freya

Freya - Norse Goddess of Love, War & Seiðr

Today I am writing about Freya (Freyja); I am deeply feeling the chaos of this world and needing a reminder to ground myself, and see love in all things despite what is happening around our planet. Today I want to call on Freya and to write of her to keep her spirit alive within this world. Freya, the ancient Norse Goddess of Love, Beauty, War, Seiðr, and Fertility. She is also known as a Goddess of Wealth. Freya is one of the most beloved deities in Norse Mythology. She was originally a goddess of the Vanir (one of the main groups of deities in Norse Mythology). Freya cries golden tears, she is a mother, a Völva, has her own chariot, is associated with boars and also has two cats. Freya is known to be very comparable to Frigg, the wife of Odin.

She is such an important goddess that she has her own meadow (Fólkvangr) to rule over. Fólkvangr is a realm in the afterlife where half of those who die in battle will go. Freya is important because she is a symbol of love and beauty. In ancient times, having a goddess who symbolizes such ideas was critical to the well being of the culture. In times of war and rage, having a goddess at your back who represented magic, love and beauty was something that could be utilized as a sign of hope.

There are many stories in Norse Mythology that tell tales of Freyja. Her most famous gadget is the Brísingamen. The Brísingamen was the very popular torc necklace that belonged to Freya. If you have read up on Norse Mythology, you will realize this piece of jewelry was featured in several stories. Freya, so beautiful and fair, was a goddess who was wanted by all - including giants. The beauty of Freya is paramount even in our culture today - because she reminds us that no matter what situation we are in, there is beauty in all things. ~ KA
