Anubis
Anubis ~ God of the Dead, Lost Souls & Mummification
Anubis was the God of the Dead and he was also associated with mummies! Anubis can be depicted with the head of a dog or jackal and he is one of the most recognized Ancient Egyptian deities. He is the son of Ra and Nephthys and he would judge the dead upon entering the realm of death. It is said that he would use the Scales of Justice as the souls of the dead were weighed, and if your soul was light he would lead you to Osiris so that your soul could experience everlasting life!
Anubis is one of the oldest gods and texts referring to him go all the way back to the Old Kingdom (circa 2686 BCE – circa 2181 BCE). To the Ancient Egyptians Anubis was also known as the god of mummification. He was such an important figure that during funerals and ceremonies relating to the dead, priests would often wear a Jackal mask over their face as they believed wholeheartedly that Anubis watched over the dead and lost souls!
